COLD MOUNTAIN
Academy Award-winning film written and directed by Anthony Minghella.
Dirk worked on set as a consultant regarding the actors' portrayal
of traditional musicians, recorded the banjo parts for one of
the principal characters, played fife on screen in the film,
performed on set to create mood/feeling, helped choose the instruments
used in the film, and arranged traditional and contemporary
material for the score. On the DVD release, he can be seen and
heard performing music from the film with Jack White in a concert
associated with the premiere.
RIDE WITH THE DEVIL
Directed by Ang Lee, score by Mychael Danna. Dirk was featured
on fiddle, banjo, and guitar with the London Symphony. Performed
on the end credit song with singer/actress Jewel.
STEVIE
A Sundance Award-winning documentary by Steve James, director
of Hoop Dreams, for Kartemquin Films. Dirk wrote and performed
the score to this powerful film, which has been shown around
the world.
STRANGER WITH A CAMERA
Produced/directed by Elizabeth Barrett for the Appalachian Film
Workshop. Featured in the PBS series "Points of View";
in documentary competition at Sundance and winner of the Silver
Spire at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Dirk
wrote and performed the score.
THE UNFINISHED CIVIL WAR
Produced/directed by Glenn Kirschbaum. First prize winner in
the documentary category at Houston Worldfest and The Sidewalk
Film Festival in Birmingham, Alabama. Dirk wrote and performed
the score.
BAMBOOZLED
Directed by Spike Lee. Dirk was a featured banjo soloist.
THE BROTHERS MCMULLEN
Directed by Edward Burns. Dirk was featured on banjo with Seamus
Egan's Irish traditional music.
COASTLINES
Directed by Victor Nuñez. Dirk composed material and
formed a band of top Louisiana musicians, The Louisiana Renegades,
for onstage appearance. World Premiere at Sundance 2002.
THE IRISH EMPIRE
A joint production of the BBC (Britain), RTE (Ireland) and ABC
(Australia). Dirk was interviewed and performed as an authority
on the earliest Irish immigrants to Appalachia.
CLIMBING COLD MOUNTAIN
Directed by Tim Bricknell and Laura Luccetti. Dirk’s music
featured throughout this documentary about the making of the
film Cold Mountain.
THOUGHTS IN THE PRESENCE OF FEAR
Directed by Herb E. Smith. An Appalshop work-in-progress based
on a powerful post-9/11 essay by Wendell Berry. Dirk adapted
material and performed the score.
FROM THE HOLLER TO THE HOOD
Another Appalshop work-in-progress concerning the SuperMax prisons
now operating in Appalachia. Dirk collaborated with producer
Danja Mowf to create a score that combines Appalachian music
with Hip Hop.
